Pizzas in Rome

Rome just might be my favorite city in the world. Every corner you turn is another breathtaking piece of history, and of course another incredible pizza or pasta. Rome is the very first European city I traveled to (when I wasn’t a baby) and I believe it is responsible for changing my life in every way. It shook me to my core way back in the year 2001, and it continues to do so every time I visit. I was lucky enough to go twice in 2019, once with Dani after going to a summer wedding in Tuscany, and again in the fall with a amazing group of pizza-loving women that I feel lucky enough to call my friends.

I still have so many pizzas to try, but these are just some of the amazing pizzas Rome has to offer…

As you can tell I have never been so excited about pizza in my entire life. This was at Emma Pizzeria, absolutely incredible, and a beautiful and special lunch filled with laughter while surrounded by strong and inspiring women that never ever say no to another slice of pizza. Fun fact: Angelina Jolie and her family sat at our table right before us! Sadly we didn’t get to see her, but the tables around us told us all about it! I was sitting in Pax’s seat.

Looking verrry similar to the margherita above at Emma, this is from Pizzeria Da Remo. We stumbled upon this by mistake, and decided to have an amazing and absolutely unecessary late night meal after an evening stroll listening to Taylor Swift. Highly recommend!

From CasaManco in the Testaccio market. So freaken good, a bajillion flavors and choices, you can choose how much you want and then pay by the weight. The potato pizza was insane, honestly it was all insane. More of a pizza al taglio style, with a thicker focaccia-like crust. The friendliest people ever!

More potato pizzas menos problemas am I right? I do love a good potato pizza… why aren’t they more common outside of Italy?? This lil’ guy is from Farinè la Pizza, a small local pizzeria recommended by a Roman colleague of mine. So tasty, served on paper without utensils, the absolutely perfect local and relaxed meal with super high quality ingredients and far from the touristy areas of Rome. Crust is a little bit thicker, not like the thin Roman-style.

Not far from Farinè la Pizza mentioned above, Dani and I visited Il Podista, another local fave. We only saw Romans there, and it is a super casual pizzeria that felt truly authentically Roman, with very traditional Roman thin-crust pizzas. Wow I just love to say the word Roman. I was delighted, but was it my favorite pizza in Rome? Definitely not, but it was one of my favorite nights we spent in Rome, in a completely different neighborhood, surrounded by locals and discovering new places.

Would we call this a pizza? Technically, no. But I felt I had to include the infamous Roman street food Trapizzino! Some call it a pizza pocket, I call it a bread triangle filled with goodies. I went with this vegan version with the famous Roman chicory, and I’d say it’s a must when in Rome for a lil’ snack or pick me up!

It honestly felt like we ate pizza all day every day when I was in Rome and yet it seems like we barely went anywhere! On my next visit to Rome (which is hopefully very soon!)these will be my pizza musts:

180g Pizzeria Romana

Ai Marmi (This pizza seems to be recommended everywhere, and yet I just didn’t make it. So much pizza so little time what can you do?)

Seu Pizza Illuminati

La Gatta Mangiona

Ivo a Trastevere

Pizzeria Formula 1 (Followed by/preceded by wine at the wine bar Il Sorì next door)

Panificio Bonci/Bonci Pizarrium (For pizza al taglio)

Will I make it to them all? Probably not. But I will certainly try.

Do you have a favorite pizza in Rome? Let me know in the comments! Also, of course I love pasta, and ate loads of it in Italy, and would love to eat loads more. But this is a pizzalust page, so I stuck to the pizza. I would love any recommendations though for any place!
